Math for Both Grades

In math -

Grade 4's are exploring measurement. They have been estimating and measuring in cm, mm, and m.
A great learning opportunity at home is to allow them to explore the house and measure various items. They are building up their references in order to estimate measurements for the times when they don't have a measuring tool with them.

They have also been exploring km and metres to determine distance. When driving, help them see how far a km is and compare it to 5 kms so they can see the difference.

Holiday baking is a great time to have them help you by measuring ingredients.

Measurement is a fun and easy math unit to do at home with them!

Today they started measuring time using analog clocks. Again, ask them to tell you the time and work with them to determine elapsed time.

Grade 5's have been exploring temperature. They have been reading thermometers and we even coded the Microbits to record temperature.

Please bring in a clear glass bottle so that we can make our own thermometers.

Today, the 5's starting measuring time up to the second.

Wednesday 5 December 2018

Grade 5 Work Due

Grade 5's should be finished their book club reading, work, and mini project if they were assigned one (Hana's Suitcase group), and their breakouts based on their book.

All this needs to be wrapped up before the Xmas break. There is now limited class time because we are preparing for the Christmas concert.

Grade 4 Powtoon Due

The grade 4's have been working on making Powtoon presentations on a medieval occupation for a few weeks now.  Many are done and we are waiting on the rest to finish so we can start the presentations.

Please check with your grade 4 that it is done. It is due on Friday.

Monday 3 December 2018

Christmas Concert

We have finally chosen our plan for the Christmas concert!

Thank you to Mr Spindler for taking the grade 4's off my hands.  They have already started their musical performance.

The grade 5's will be performing The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

We are currently looking for:

 - large boxes to build scenery
-  Grinch suits
-  red Santa jacket

Grade 5 Micro:bit Draw

Thank you to all those who were interested in the opportunity to spend Friday with me downtown at the Microsoft office. I wish I could take you all!

2 students were selected in the draw to go and will be joining 2 more from Mme Sarah's class.

Zander Update

Thank you to Zander’s parents for taking the time throughout their very emotional day to give us updates on how he’s doing. Thank you on their behalf for your thoughts and for supporting his friends who care so much about him.

The surgery went well. He has been awake and talking but will stay in ICU for a bit to rest up.  We plan on having him back in class and inspiring us all again after the Christmas Break!

Looking For Glass Bottles

Hello Parents,

Grade 5's are in need of clear glass bottles to borrow for a math-science experiment.

These may be hard to come by so we are willing to take clear beer bottles as well.  Not too large a bottle and it should have a narrow opening that we can easily seal shut.

Kind of like, but not limited, to these  sizes of bottles.

Grade 4 Snacks

Dear grade 4 parents,

This is a request from the children in class who are constantly being asked for snacks in the afternoon from their classmates.  It has been posted already that many students are still hungry in the afternoon or choosing not to eat their last snack because they don't like it. They have been asked to talk to their parents about making sure they have enough snacks to last the day.  I'm sure you have seen them attack your refrigerator and clean it out within minutes.

Our other friends who are managing their snacks throughout the day are feeling pressured to feed their friends. Please help take the pressure off them. They are kind souls who want to feed their friends .......

Test Reminder

A reminder that both classes have a math test on Friday. Both classes had a review today, marked, and should be brought home with them.

Cool News For Grade 5

An awesome opportunity has come up for 2 lucky grade 5 students!  On December 7th, I will be attending a workshop downtown to support our Micro:bit  Living Space project as part of Computer Science Education Week.

And.... I get to bring 2 students with me as my co-learners for the day! This would be treated as a field trip and you would have to fill out the permission form.  Parents are responsible for getting their child to the workshop and picking them up.  The workshop is downtown on Queen St.

I went to a similar workshop last year sponsored by Microsoft. It was fantastic with an incredible provided lunch, snacks, and hands on coding!

Please read the link for more information and details.

After you  have looked everything over and have discussed with you child please send a note in their agenda letting me know that they can be entered into the draw to choose 2 students.

Grade 5 Book Club

Grade 5's have started Book Club. They examined the following books and decided on their own which book they would like to read. As you can see, there is a theme to our first book club selections and it's a heavy theme. The class have been designing digital breakouts (online escape rooms) which focused on WWl and WWll and we have kept the theme going as we approach Remembrance Day. A lot of prepping them for the content has been provided along with a warning that the content might bring out emotions and feelings that they are unsure of. The Boy in The Stripped Pajamas is the most emotional book of the selections. This book has been in Book Club for grade 5's for the last few years and I'm aware of it's content and the effect it can have. This Book Club is more teacher guided and I have more of a presence in the groups than with other selections that are more small group student guided.

Please check with your grade 5 and ask which book they are reading. I have included a link for each one for you to become familiar with their book. It is that time of year when students are reading or having books read to them in other classes with similar content and sometimes that content is misunderstood and talked about on the yard. It's important that your child is familiar with the historical truths and be cognizant that we have St Anne families whose ancestors are survivors or have come from modern day war torn countries.

Very 1st Gr 4 Math Tests

Sometime during the move(s) to the portable, the grade 4 place value tests were misplaced by a helpful student. They have since been located and corrections that needed to be made have been made. Those tests are coming home on Tuesday with those who didn't get them back originally.

Sorry for the delay. It was a hectic 2 months waiting for our portable and moving in.

Thursday 1 November 2018

Math Tests

Math tests from both grades have been given back and should be brought home in their assessment folders.

If your child does not bring one home today, it's probably because they haven't finished it or had to redo some questions. It will be coming home once they work out the last few questions.

We have spent some extra time working on the more challenging multi step word problems together. Sometimes they need a few more pieces given to them to help solve them.

Progress Reports

Progress reports have been sent home today.  I am the grade 5 homeroom teacher so they will be bringing them home from me. Everyone was given theirs.

Grade 4's get them from their homeroom teacher, not from me.

Please sign the progress report stub and the envelope to be reused and have your grade 5 return it to me.  Grade 4 returns it to their morning teacher.

Interviews - grade 5's are doing great and unless you have a concern you'd like to talk about then feel free to book an interview. Or, you will find a note in your grade 5's envelope today from me asking for an interview.

Having 54 students means I can't meet everyone so I'd like to focus on the grade 4's for interviews. There will be a number of you that I would like to invite in for interviews. Please wait for a note next week requesting one. If you haven't received an invite and would like an interview, of course feel free to book one if there are times available.

Wednesday 24 October 2018

Grade 4 Chat

A few talks were had today in grade 4. The entire grade 4 population was called together by our V.P to remind them of the higher expectations we hold them to in junior when it comes to behaviour and learning skills.

A separate, more emotional chat was had with our class and a few other friends to help them understand why a classmate will be absent for many weeks. Please follow up with your child to see how you can support them if they have concerns or fears.

Spirit Week

Gr 4 Math Review

We did a practice review today in class in grade 4 to help them get ready for their test on Thursday.

Some will be bringing home the review to finish it because they needed more time or because they did not use their time wisely.

If your child has brought theirs home to finish it, you will have to go over and mark it please for them since they won't get their marked review back in time for tomorrow to know what they need to focus their studying on.

Monday 22 October 2018

Math Tests

There will be math tests to wrap up numeration this Thursday ( October 25th).

Gr 4 will cover 4 digit addition and subtraction in number and word problems. They will also have add/subtract and solve problems that involve money amounts to $100.

Grade 5 will cover 5 digit addition and subtraction in number and word problems. They will be responsible for money amounts up to $1000.

Picture Day

Just a reminder that Tuesday (tomorrow) is picture day for grades 4 and 5.  They will be taken in the morning.

Monday 15 October 2018

Hungry Grade 4's

Bad news grade 4 parents - your grocery bills are going to start increasing.  For a few weeks now, there have been plenty of students claiming to not have any snacks left in the afternoon for last snacks.  They are a hungry bunch so please check with them to make sure they have enough packed for the day to keep them going.

Grade 4 Autobiographies

Hello grade 4 parents, your children have started brainstorming in order to write their autobiographies.  So far they have lots of interesting stories to share that they remember or have been told.

They should be coming home asking you questions about themselves, their early years, their ancestors, and about you.  Please help them fill in the gaps and share interesting stories and facts with them so they have lots to write about.

They will be taking the information and stories you share with them and turning it into a story about their lives.

Wednesday 10 October 2018

October Update

Grade 4

The 4's are still a work in progress. They wrote up contracts today to hold themselves accountable for their actions and set goals on ways to improve. If they break their contract, it will be sent home for their parents to sign and return. We talked about the things they are doing well and the areas they need to improve on.

Marked tests will be sent home tomorrow. The last of the students were finishing them today. They will be bringing them home in their yellow assessment folders. Please sign it and have them return the entire folder with the test. We have now moved into adding and subtracting 4 digit numbers and working with money amounts. These are very easy things to practise at home or when out shopping.

Congratulations to Sofia, Will, and Carter for making their first St Anne school team. Good luck at the cross country meet!

The grade 4's will have a supply teacher on Wednesday as I'm in the school working on something else.

Grade 5

The 5s are still going strong and doing a great job. Their tests went home on Monday in their orange assessment folders for you to sign. If you haven't seen it come home yet, please ask your child for it.
They too have started addition and subtraction with 5 digits and working with money. These are easy skills to practise and develop at home with them.

Students should be finished their research project on either the ISS, Mars, or David Saint Jacques. Many are close to finishing up their biographies on Terry Fox.

If you haven't sent in the information verification sheet yet, please do.

Portable Update

It's there but not exactly ready for us to learn in yet. The grade 5's took it for a spin today and we discussed how we can still manage a flexible learning environment in a rectangle.

We will need hand sanitizer since we don't have a sink and kleenex please to be sent in.

Tuesday 25 September 2018

Our New Digs

Our portable has arrived but it is not move in friendly yet. Estimated move in date should be sometime next week.

Boys Soccer Team

Congratulations go out to Noah, Rafael, Sebastian, and Nabiyot for making the soccer team.

They will be at the tournament with me this Thursday which means there will be a supply teacher.

Reports from last week's supply teacher said the grade 5's had a great morning but the grade 4's had difficulty in having a supply. You can do better grade 4's.

Math Tests - Thursday the 27th

Both grades have place value tests this Thursday. It will cover reading, writing, and representing large numbers as well as standard and expanded form. Ordering and comparing numbers as well as rounding.

Grade 5's had a review quiz last week and 4's will be getting one today to practice.

Monday 17 September 2018

Girls Soccer

Congratulations to Ry-Ann, Brianna, Raeghan, Aloka, Alissa, Olivia, Abigail, and Melissa for making the soccer team. They will be joining me Thursday at the tournament. Please return your permission forms.

Boys tryouts started today.  Lots of great talent on the field.

Grade 5 Math Homework

Some grade 5's should be bringing home their math work because they did not finish it in class for a number of reasons. Mostly because they were talking and not working hard enough at it.

The rule is - if you don't finish work in class then you take it home and return it the next day finished.

Hapara Workspaces with Math Aids

Each grade now has a Workspace where they can find math aids and resources to help them with math. These are like anchor charts organised by math strand at their disposal to use. They might also help you understand how to do certain tasks or help to explain vocabulary and expectations.

It will be added to as we go along and get to each strand.

What's Been Going On In Grade 5?

Your fives are doing great! We've done a bit of math and most are able to push past the gr 5 expectation of large numbers up to 100,000.  They have been creating infographics to make visual representations of numbers.

You may have also heard that we are moving to Mars! Well,  something like that.  Official word came in today from the Canadian Space Agency and Let's Talk Science that we've been accepted into the Living Space Project.  Our technology is on the way and once we move into our portable we will begin our experiments.  More details on the project can be found in their Hapara Workspace.  I will eventually post it on here at some point.

In order to get ready, students have begun research projects and have chosen to write about either Mars, the International Space Station, or Canadian Astronaut David Saint Jacques.  These 3 topics are our focus since our Living Space Project involves all 3.

What's Been Happening In Grade 4?

We have started some math and are exploring numbers up to 10,000. They have also been learning and improving their computer skills. Learning how to send emails and create Docs with Google.  They have been working on making an infographic to visually demonstrate large numbers.

Some students will be bringing home math in order to catch up on work not finished in class.
